Mythbusting Orthodontics: Braces Breakdown

At Columbia Orthodontics, our mission is to help each of our patients achieve a healthy, beautiful smile - and we believe patient education is critical to that cause. We've heard some unfortunate rumors and myths about orthodontic treatment that leave many patients with fears and beliefs that just aren't founded, so for this blog, we wanted to dispel a few of the most common myths surrounding orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Myths - Busted!

  • Braces Are Painful: This is probably the most common misconception out there about braces. So, let us say it loud and clear: braces don't hurt! It's common for patients to experience a minor sense of pressure or discomfort after first getting braces, but this is manageable with warm salt water rinses or over the counter painkillers and will fade within days.

  • My Teeth Will Get Straighter Over Time: If there's one thing to know about malocclusions and alignment problems, it's that they almost always get worse over time, not better! Orthodontic treatment is the only way to ensure a straight, healthy smile.

  • My Dentist Can Give Me Braces: Orthodontic treatments use complex techniques and technologies to make significant, permanent changes to the teeth, jaws, and facial structure. These treatments take years of proprietary training that regular dentists simply don't have. The only way to ensure safe, successful treatment is to work with a licensed orthodontist.

  • Only Teens Can Get Braces: Far from it! While the majority of our patients are adolescents, we also provide early and adult orthodontic treatment. In fact, over a quarter of our patients are adults!
